BMW packed the new 7-Series sedan with optional gadgets ranging from radar-assisted cruise control to blind spot detection. There's even a heads-up display. But the coolest feature is the new night-vision system that likens a twilight drive to a Special Forces recon mission.

The Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection system significantly advances the first-gen system found in the last 7-series by adding people-spotting technology that distinguishes between animals and humans. The system was developed by the Swedish firm Autoliv Electronics. It is the latest evolution of technology that Lexus and Mercedes-Benz also have offered since Cadillac brought it to the automotive sector in the Deville sedan.

Since then, thermal imaging has made way for far- and near-infrared cameras that detect even the smallest changes in temperature. BMW's passive system uses far-infrared technology to scan for heat, whereas Mercedes' near-infrared system illuminates the road with projected infrared light. The BMW system stands apart for its extreme depth, clarity in rain and ability to minimize extraneous information.

Despite the added safety such systems offer, Cadillac and Lexus dropped them because few people bought them. But BMW, like Mercedes, still sees a market for it.

The system does a great job of helping you see in the dark, but it is not without flaws. BMW isn't suggesting drivers switch off their headlights. The system provides a crisp, clear picture of 1, feet of pavement ahead of you, a distance Autoliv says is twice the range of the headlights. A silver dollar-size far-infrared camera in the grille detects the temperature of everything ahead.

A computer converts the data into an image shown at right that appears on the dashboard's i-Drive navigation display. Warmer objects like a pedestrian or moose are white, while cooler objects like a parked car are black. The pedestrian-detection feature kicks in when the car exceeds 25 mph, scanning the road 10 to yards ahead of you. Pedestrians appear with a yellow tint, helping you figure out if that dark shape is a kid on a bike or a dog in the road.

The system also monitors your speed and trajectory to warn you if you're on a collision course.The BMW Night Vision 3rd generation gives the driver a black and white image of the surrounding area before the vehicle on the central information display. BMW Night Vision is an assist system for night vision. Objects are detected at a range of 80 to meters.

The range depends on the weather conditions. BMW Night Vision is based on far-infrared technology.

During this the thermal radiation of objects is detected. Via algorithms on the NVE control unit, people and animals are automatically detected in the image. After the evaluation of distance and direction of movement, the driver is warned against persons or animals at risk with the aid of a symbol.

The Night Vision camera is installed behind the left ornamental grille. Rain, dirt, snow or ice can impair the functionality of the camera. The camera is automatically heated at low ambient temperatures.We recently had the opportunity to experience the latest in night vision technology on a BMW 7 Series. Though we have evaluated night vision systems in the past, this one proved to have far clearer images and was also able to highlight animals and pedestrians.

As with many new safety technologies, the newest night vision systems are currently available on BMW and other high-end makes such as Audi and Mercedes-Benz. You can find headlight evaluations in the road tests. Each year more than 4, pedestrians are killed, and tens of thousands more are injured, when struck by a car.

Not surprising, nearly 70 percent of those impacts happen at night, when drivers have limited visibility. Are HIDs better than standard halogens? Regardless of headlight type, our evaluations do show that even the best of any type do not provide enough forward visibility to allow a driver to see, react, and brake for pedestrians or objects ahead unless they are going rather slowly.

What this also means is that any technologies that help improve our nighttime visibility should positively affect pedestrian safety. This system went one step further in not only detecting living obstacles, but by making them still more visible by shining a spotlightlike light on them to make the driver even more aware of their presence.

The spotlight is generated from lights in the fog lamp housing, so it stays low and close to the road. It was quite effective. Currently, standards for lighting in the United States prohibit technologies such as this. Regulations also prohibit headlights and other forward lights from turning on and off during operation, a function limited to identifying emergency vehicles. Features such as dynamic light spot are currently available on vehicles in Europe.

For now, we will continue to evaluate current and new technologies in lighting, and headlamp performance on each vehicle we test. And we will monitor standards, advocating where appropriate to allow newer technologies that offer the potential to improve night driving safety.
